How Gillette shaved off its competitors?

Stainless steel blades may not be a match for the Man of Steel yet Gillette seems to have stolen the march with its campaign during the Oscar fever.

You would have heard when they said “Gillette – The Best A Man Can Get”, and they proved it so.

This Oscar, Gillette came out with a unique advertisement right during the ceremony and man what a catch it was!

Did you know that 18 out of the last 20 Best Actors in the leading role in the Oscars were clean shaven? Gillette told this in its campaign.

True. From 2013 Academy Awards to 1993, all the Best Actor winners were clean shaven leaving Al Pacino who won in 1992 for ‘The Scent of a Woman’ and Jeff Bridges in 2009 in ‘Crazy Heart’. They both carried a French beard.

The rest from 2013 to 1993 being, Matthew McConaughey (2013), Daniel Day Lewis (2012 & 2007), Jean Dujardin (2011), Colin Firth (2010), Jeff Bridges (2009), Sean Penn (2008 & 2003), Forest Whitaker (2006), Philip Seymour Hoffman (2005), Jamie Foxx (2004), Adrien Brody (2002), Russell Crowe (2001), Kevin Spacey (1999), Roberto Benigni (1998), Jack Nicholson (1997), Geoffrey Rush (1996), Nicolas Cage (1995) and Tom Hanks (1994 & 1993).

Interestingly, many of these actors played a role with a beard – like Daniel Day Lewis who got an Oscar for ‘Lincoln’ in 2012. He had supported a beard all through the movie but shaved off for the Oscar ceremony. Jamie Foxx and Denzel Washington also shaved off for the Oscars.

Full marks to Gillette, a Procter & Gamble-owned brand, for this timely advertisement for stealing the eye balls while grooming the men at the same time and shaving the campaigns of the established razor companies.

Man of steelTailpiece: A “Saving Is Bathed” campaign was earlier launched by Bollywood stars to urge Indian men to shave every day. Neha Dhupia, Mailaika Arora Khan, Vidyut Jammwal and Arbaaz Khan propagated this Gillette idea when both Dhupia and Malaika highlighted their preference for clean shaven men and claimed that 83% of Indian women think clean shaven men are more attractive. Arbaaz and Jammwal were then also seen shaving seated on bathtubs maintaining that “Unshaved is Unbathed” and that they would shave for their partners every day.

So many women in the world would be happier souls if all their men shaved every day. It sure does make the man a little more desirable. Also for many women, a clean shaven look is quite a ‘Turn On.’
